Is It Time For This Company To Change Their Slogan?

by Adam Kreitman

Huh?!

Did I just hear what I thought I heard?

I was listening to NPR this morning when one of the commercials “sponsorship announcements” came on. It was for the investment fund company T Rowe Price. Their slogan?

“Invest With Confidence”

Really?

In a world of a banking system on the brink of collapse, investment companies dropping like flies, investor returns that would rival Tiger Woods’ golf score for a weekend tournament, and Bernie Madoff -  is anyone really investing with confidence??!!

I have no idea how long T Rowe Price has had this company slogan.

If it’s a recent thing then whoever came up with, and signed off on, this  slogan should be fired. Seriously, now, just fire them.

If it’s been their company slogan for a while, and is part of their corporate identity and brand, then I can see not wanting to change it just because of the current and temporary economic crisis.

However, even if it’s the latter, it’s probably wise to show some sensitivity and understanding of reality and put the slogan into hibernation for a little while.

At least until the words “invest” and “confidence” can be used in the same sentence again without being the punchline.
