How To Add Social Bookmark Buttons To WordPress.com Blog Posts

by Adam Kreitman

Being frustrated about there being no built-in way to add social bookmarking buttons to my WordPress.com blog posts, I went looking for an easy way to do it. I found one on another blog and made the video below to demonstrate the technique and help those even less technically inclined than I. If you’re using WordPress.com for your blogging, I hope this video helps you drive a lot more traffic to your blog!

Nice video! Very clear instructions. I’m going to go add these to my own blog right away.

Thanks for creating this!

Have I ever mentioned that you are the coolest tech-ish or vaguely techy person I know. I used this immediately. I take back all those things that I said about you. Speaking of “about you”…yet another idea that I stole from you…it is, by far, the most read page on my site. Thanks, Adam…you’re a good man no matter what they say.

Wow! That’s quite the compliment coming from one of HR World’s top 100 leadership and management bloggers!

Thanks, Jeremy. I miss you! ;)

Hello. Just took a look at your video – great job explaining it. Thanks. I ended up adding something else to my blog, but will keep this one as an option.

thanks for the post. I’ve managed to get it working successfully through following your very precise and thorough instructions.

There’s two links I would like, and you happen to have them 1) TwitThis 2) Facebook.

I know you’ve said you can change the text file to remove or add other icons (social media bookmarks). But I don’t know what the links are for TwitThis and Facebook. Are you able to provide that?

Thanks again.

Not to worry, I figured it out. Cheers again for your help.

Hi Adam,

Sorry to disturb you. I followed the instructions you gave in this blog
http://swissmoneyblog.com/2008/07/10/how-to-add-social-bookmark-buttons-to-wordpresscom-blog-posts/ and was able to add all the buttons just fine. But I noticed that you now have the Facebook button on your blog. Would you mind sharing with me how you did it please!

Thanks a million!

Hung

Hi Hung-

I moved my WordPress blog from WordPress.com to one that I host myself. When you host WordPress yourself you have access to all sorts of free plugins that give your blog much more functionality than a blog hosted on WordPress.com. One of the plugins is called Sociable and it automatically adds social bookmarking buttons to all of your blog posts. You can select from around 50 or so social bookmarking sites including Facebook which is how I got that button on my blog.

Thanks-
Adam
