Metaphors and the Best Company Name Ever

You live in England. It’s 90+ degrees outside and your air conditioning goes out, turning your house into a sauna. Who are you going to call to get things chilled down in a hurry?

Stiff Nipples Air Conditioning Service, of course!

Because the name is descriptive.
Because the name is memorable.
Because the name paints a vivid mental picture.

That’s the power of metaphors.

Metaphors take the properties of one object and apply them to another, seemingly unrelated, object. It’s one thing to drone on and on to tell people what you mean. It’s quite another to use a poignant, succinct metaphor to paint a vivid mental image for them.

Do this effectively and you are well on your way to seeing great improvements in your writing putting your writing on steroids.

Actually, I was on my way to a lunch appointment today and was almost hit by a large delivery truck. The name on the side: Big Boy’s Steel Erection.

When I got back to my office, I googled their name. I found a blog post about some other famous names in the beautiful Show-Me state…check it out: http://nervyb.blogspot.com/2005/06/big-boy-steel-erection.html

And here I thought that those were just inappropriate e-mails.
